Drywall Texture Options
After drywall hangers hang the gypsum board or sheetrock, tapers or mud men will embark on what is usually a six or seven day process of coating, mudding, sanding and spraying on texture. The texture largely depends on your preferences and the room’s function.
Acoustic/Popcorn: heavy texture used most often on ceilings to deaden sound; appearance resembles popcorn or cottage cheese
Knockdown: made of thick texturing material and resembles Spanish-style stucco
Orange peel/Splatter: common; easy to match if it needs repair; little beads all over surface gives the appearance of an orange peel or newly washed car
Sand swirl: looks like someone took a brush and brushed the sand texture surface in an arc-shaped motion
Sand texture: small granules add depth, softness, and texture
Smooth: two types depending on whether using a wallpaper finish or a paint finish
